You can ask at your local MB dealer and check the power steering fluid could Amsoil MB or power steering fluid. I have two 300SE (1988 and 1989). I use the same liquid that I, in my submission Shell Merc / Dex III. Shell is the original manufacturer for the MB power steering fluid.
In 2001, E-Class Owner's Manual says MB power steering fluid (000 989 88 03).
However, published in the factory authorized service products in November 2001, reads as follows:
E-Class
MB Power Steering Fluid MB part no. 000 989 88 03
or an approved dextronic III ATF
